So you want to dress like that cool gamer girl that knows her way around the cyber scene? I got you! Let’s master the E-Girl Aesthetic.
What started as a derogatory term used to describe female gamers is now a full-blown subculture. The E-Girl aesthetic is hot right now and showing no signs of stopping any time soon. It isn’t just one of the leading fashion trends derived from the Japanese fashion scenes; for many, it is much more than just a fad; it’s a lifestyle. So what actually is it? Let’s get into it but as always, for a visual idea, check out my Pinterest video pin (to the right) and remember to save it to one of your Pinterest boards for future reference.
What is ‘E-girl’ Aesthetic?
The E-girl aesthetic is an alternative style that can be summed up as the aspiration to look like a hot gamer girl with a cute, goofy, nerdy side. She is also entangled in many online communities, standard platforms being k-pop, anime, cosplay, Tik Tok and twitch. It is an online digital fashion style that has been around since Y2K but has gained a lot of traction throughout the pandemic when the use of cyberspace vastly increased. The E stands for electronic, and the aesthetic is reminiscent of anime, k-pop and the love of online culture. The look can be described as the fusion of the gothic, modern grunge look paired with Japanese streetwear and kawaii culture. The E-girl look is very diverse and can be portrayed in various ways, the most popular approaches being grunge and gothic styles. The aesthetic can also be used as an alter-ego by many who develop a persona specifically for the internet. Despite its face-value popularity, the electronic-girl aesthetic is unfortunately not without its stereotypes and criticisms. E-girls are often negatively stereotyped as fakes, clout chasers or ‘pick mes’ perpetuating a particular persona for popularity.
E-Girl Aesthetic Colour Palette
The E-girl aesthetic is flexible in terms of what colours appear. Dark colours are prevalent, but many palettes offer pops of bright, vivid neon and pastel colours. Individuality is injected within the E-girl aesthetic; many girls channel their identity through trendy hairstyles and alternative approaches to makeup. Heavy eyeliner and dramatic blush are typical of this aesthetic, and the overall makeup tends to give off a doll-like appearance reminiscent of anime and manga characters.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This aesthetic has also been under fire regarding Asian fishing; this term refers to individuals using makeup to appear as though they have features commonly associated with Eastern Asians. Please be considerate and sensitive when adopting specific aesthetics and be sure not to purposefully offend anyone, especially if they are kind enough to explain why what you are doing is seen as offensive to their or people’s cultures. There are many ways to adopt an aesthetic and showcase your personal style in an inoffensive way.
That’s all from me,
Until next time,
Unique.
