Grunge has had a makeover! Read on to see how rebellion meets femininity meets sensuality in the resurgence of the grunge look, which is shaping to be one of the biggest trends of the upcoming fashion season.
Grunge Gone Glam?
90s fashion nostalgia has taken over the fashion scene over the past seasons, and it is not stopping in SS23. 2023 is set to be the year of grunge styles but with a twist. A quick definition: grunge is the style home to a laidback and rebellious aesthetic. It grew in popularity during the 80s and 90s when people tried to emulate the looks of their favourite musicians, with Nirvana being a popular favourite. The look is nostalgically synonymous with baggy, androgynous, dishevelled looks. The beauty lies within the aesthetic, not appearing clean but rather veering towards an unkempt look due to the edgier nature of the subculture. However, according to the SS23 runway shows, grunge has elevated and refined itself and now offers a glam high fashion take on the original aesthetic. Don’t be mistaken; the authentic grunge DNA is still very much present with the rise in popularity of raw edges, frayed hems, flannel shirts and chokers. But these quintessential pieces will be paired with sharp blazers, luxurious fabrics and dainty jewellery for a clean, chic look.
Right Off The Runway – SS23
Grunge showed up in all forms on the SS23 runways. The most iconic moment may have been from Bottega Veneta’s collection in which Kate Moss stunned in a casually minimalist grunge-esque outfit featuring a chic flannel shirt and jeans. Masha Popova flaunted a feminine twist of the aesthetic showcasing cut outs and baggy but cropped pieces. Versace showcased a stunning set of looks in their collection that they titled “a goddess gone grunge” and included various garments from biker jackets to low waist jeans and everything in between, with almost everything in the collection being black. Plenty more designers incorporated grunge pieces in their shows, including Knwls and Blumarine.
