See-Through This Trend: Sheer Fashion Is Here To Stay

Sheer Fashion

Like it or not; The time for sheer is here and it is back with a vengeance, are you willing to bare it all?

See-Through The Rise of Sheer

Sheer has been in for a while, with popularity growing exponentially throughout 2022, with the rise of Y2K fashion. While sheer is a common theme from the Y2K era, sheer has been on and off the fashion scene way before.
In fact, sheer became fashionable on the European fashion scene in the 18th century and has since made cyclical appearances in fashion trends thanks to designers and models popularising sheer clothing. For example, Yves Saint Laurent’s drew attention to transparent fabrics in the 60s. You may also be familiar with Kate Moss’ iconic and daring sheer slip dress moment.
So what exactly is sheer? Sheer clothing is made from see-through fabrics that allow the wearer’s body to be visible through the clothing. Sheer can range in extremeness, and different materials can give a different effect due to the range in denier. Popular fabrics typically used in sheer clothing are lace, mesh, chiffon and silk organza, but there are many more. Sheer is often just a blanket term for clothing made from these thin fabrics with see-through qualities.

Right Off The Runway – SS23

Although already very popular throughout 2022, sheer fashion is taking the fashion world by storm in SS23. The evidence was all over the SS23 runways this year: Yves Saint Laurent, Nensi Dojaka (pictured), Mirror Palais, Tory Burch and many more designers featured several sheer styles in their latest shows. This trend is one to see an eye out for, especially after warmer weather hits.

Do You Dare To Bare It All?

Sheer fashion is iconic and also very trendy. Still, it is one of the trends that could be difficult to confidently work into your wardrobe, especially if you are not a fan of showing too much skin. However, there is a sheer style for everyone, and anyone of any size or shape can make this trend work for them.
Little styling tips can also be used if you still want to go down a conservative route for even the most risque of garments. You only have to go as sheer as you feel comfortable doing so. Remember, different materials will have different deniers, so this look can be achieved without being ‘naked.’

So do you want to know how you can wear this trend? Let’s discuss a few styling ideas for your new sheer clothing?

So How Much Will You Bare? – How To Style Sheer Clothing

  • Sheer Dresses: Dresses are among the trendiest items when it comes to sheer clothing, and they are also highly versatile. If you aren’t ready for your 90s Kate Moss moment, you can layer up a sheer dress to make it more conservative. You can use the sheer dress as a cover-up to elevate another dress or outfit- some see-through dresses come with an inbuilt slip dress. You may also wear a fitted playsuit/romper underneath if you want to bare enough for an iconic look without going all the way. For the braver of the masses, you can rock this dress by itself with nude underwear if you don’t want to disrupt the fantasy. Remember to play with patterns and prints to enhance your look.
  • Sheer Skirts – Sheer skirts may seem very risqué, especially if the first type of skirt springing to mind is a mini skirt. Remember, all sorts of skirts can be used to wear this trend. The trick to achieving the perfect sheer skirt look lies in confidence; if you aren’t comfortable in this outfit, it will show. It doesn’t have to be an all-baring outfit, either! Make it work for you! You can wear tight or leggings underneath your sheer skirt if you prefer a modest take on this trend. If you are comfortable, you can wear just a pair of full briefs underneath, or if you are choosing a mini skirt, why not pair it with an oversized long-line blazer? Feel free to be daring and just pair the sheer skirt with a thong if you want a particularly risqué look.
  • Sheer Tops –  Just like skirts, sheer tops come in plenty of styles, making them a versatile addition to your wardrobe. You can be daring and opt for a see-through crop top or go for a naked but not approach by choosing a sheer turtleneck or bodysuit. They are super simple to style; the only difficulty is choosing a bra. If you are comfortable doing so, I will encourage a braless approach for a seamless look. However, if you prefer extra support or coverage, go for a nude bra or bralette (close to your skin tone) or a bra that matches the modal colour of the sheer top. You can also take a creative approach and choose a bra that completely contrasts the top. Why not pair a sheer white mesh bodysuit with a bright cobalt or fuschia bra for a bold look. You can, of course, pair your tops with anything that a standard top would go with – exactly; everything from skirts to jeans to layers to wear with dresses.
  • Jackets & Blazers– Nothing is worse than putting on an outfit you love and covering it up with a coat because it is a bit too cold to go without; problem solved: sheer jackets. You can style them with everything as you would a regular jacket. Bomber jackets are the most wanted jacket this autumn, so if you love the style, why not continue it for spring/summer and cop yourself with a sheer bomber jacket? Opt for a sheer blazer or a trench coat if you want to go the classier route. Make the most of sheer longline coats for warmer weather, and use them as an additional stylish and practical accessory for your evening wear.
  • Jumpsuits & Catsuits: So, how bold are you willing to go? If the above seems like a walk in the park, why not venture into the world of sheer catsuits? A sheer catsuit is a bold, daring and racy move; not only is it see-through, but catsuits show everything; they are a second skin. Of course, suppose you prefer something other than form-fitting garments. In that case, you can opt for a looser-fitting sheer jumpsuit to tackle the second issue. The beauty of a catsuit is that it is an outfit in and of itself; you just need to accessorise and add a pair of shoes. However, if you aren’t ready to bare it all, you can always add a jacket or a cover-up to take off the edge. Remember to pick seamless underwear to avoid any lumps and bumps from the outlines of your lingerie – well, if you choose to wear any, that is.

I will leave you to rummage through your see-through clothing collections. This trend is here to stay for the foreseeable future, so there is still time to add a few to your basket. Start stocking up on your favourite sheer clothes so you are prepared for next year’s Spring and Summer months.

Until next time,

Unique
