Its Official – The Revival of Low-Rise Styles In Fashion

Low Rise Styles Are Back In Fashion - Low Rise Jeans, Low Rise Skirts & Low Rise Trousers (Also Low Waist Styles: Low waist jeans, Low waist skirts, Low waist trouser) Y2k Fashion Takeover - fashion Trend from the runway

Now here is a polarising and potentially nerve-wracking trend: low-rise styles – Yes, jeans, skirts, shorts and everything in between are officially sitting, literally.

The Low-Down On Low-Rise

As you know, the Y2K aesthetic took the fashion world by storm. So let’s be honest; it was only a matter of time before this quintessential staple returned with its era. As predicted in January, low-rise styles are, well, on the rise.

Low-rise (or low waist) styles were trendy in the early 2000s – Paris Hilton and Britney Spears have entered the chat. Low rises have a lower waistband which sits below the natural waist: they tend to sit at or below the hips meaning more of the stomach (and other parts) are on display than usual which is the cause of the polarising opinions.

Right Off The Runway – SS23

You don’t have to be happy about it, but you can’t deny that low-rise styles may stay on fashion scene for a long time. They caused quite a stir as they graced the runways this year, which was to be predicted from the frenzy caused by Miu Miu’s SS22 Y2K low cut nostalgia inducing collection of daring low-rise designs.

The trend is seemingly going even harder for Autumn 2022 and judging from SS23 runways (LaQuan Smith SS23 in the Images), the trend will likely continue through 2023, possibly becoming a staple style. Yes, you still have a chance to live your noughties Paris Hilton fantasy.

Attitude Adjustment

If you are still cringing at the low-rise resurgence, don’t worry; there are many more options on the market now. Many of them are all-around more comfortable than the ones you remember– In fact, the most popular styles are baggy and oversized. Also, you can still achieve the low-rise aesthetic with rises that sit at a reasonable level; you only have to go as low as you are comfortable.

It is also important to point out that when low-rise styles were first on the scene in the early 2000s, it wasn’t a time that inclusivity, diversity and body positivity were on the radar. But times have changed, and the resurgence came with an attitude makeover, meaning that low-rise styles are now very inclusive and available to all shapes and sizes.

So How Low Can You Go? – How To Style Low Rise Styles

  • Crop Top & Ultra-Low Rise Baggy Jeans: – hear me out: It sounds a bit excessive and quite stressful to display that much torso, but I promise you that, unlike your initial thoughts, this will accentuate your waist. Give it a try at home and see how you feel; if you aren’t comfortable, you can always take it off and wear something else – no one even has to know you tried it.
  • Half-Buttoned Shirt & Low-Rise Skirt: Half-buttoned shirts are holding their own in the world of trends at the minute, so why not pair one with a low-rise skirt for a fresh, on-trend Y2k-inspired aesthetic
  • Oversized Blazer, Low Rise Tailored Trousers & Cropped Shirt: If you are uncomfortable at the thought of baring your belly to the world, why not put a spin on a traditional suit and grab an oversized blazer paired with a cropped shirt and throw on a pair of low rise tailored pants. The blazer provides extra coverage; leaving it unbuttoned will show off your low-rise trousers.
  • Low-rise Jeans & Plain White Tee – Low-rise jeans are already a statement, why not dial back and pair your hip huggers with a plain white top – spoiler alert in case you didn’t know but both plain white shirts and white tank tops are also a hit for the new season.
  • All Tucked In: if you are still umming and erring about trying out the trend, a fail-safe combination is a bodysuit or even tucking in your shirt. The low rise is on display, but your body parts aren’t (if you choose a trouser variation instead of the skirt below), so it is a win-win. Using a high leg bodysuit will achieve the thong peek aesthetic that was also popular in the early 2000s.

I will leave you to rummage through your low-rise collections; maybe you saved a few from back in the day? If not, it isn’t too late to add a few to your basket.

Until next time,

Unique
