It is time to step up the romance and finally hit up that coffee shop you have secretly been dying to go to all in the name of aesthetics! Read on to see how the romcom core trend will take over the 2023 fashion scene.
Barbiecore Who? It’s Time For Romance
Romcom core is set to blow up this Spring/Summer season. Although the trend may be a nod to the Barbiecore trend, as there we will definitely expect to see romantic pink hues, the romcom core trend manifests as a totally different energy. ‘Main character’ aesthetics have been widespread, and this one is bound to take the cake; it is all about emulating the aesthetic and energy of the protagonist of romantic comedy films, tv shows or books if that is more your thing. The aesthetic is flirty, dreamy, frilly, feminine, and, as the name suggests, very romantic. It is more than the aesthetic, though; it is about fully emulating the personality of the fictional rom-com character, particularly those relating to the stereotypical cult favourite cheesy movies set in the 2000s. To wrap up, think about taking a little walk to the coffee shop to read the book you just picked up from the local bookstore and accidentally spilling coffee on the person destined to be the love of your life; you get the gist, right?
Right Off The Runway – SS23
Romance definitely showed up on the SS23 runways during fashion week. Wes Gordon’s Caroline Herrera flaunted a stunningly flirty collection that looked like it stepped off the page of your favourite romance novel. This is no surprise as Wes Gordon confirmed that the collection that featured florals, ball skirts, gowns and power suits was inspired by Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden. SS Daley’s collection for the SS23 runways was inspired by Queer Romance; SS Daley took inspiration from the secret romance between English authors Vita Sackville-West and Violet Trefusis. The collection included sheer pin-tuck summer shirts, balloon sleeves, cotton twill and florals. Jason Wu showcased sheer tops and gowns on braless models and glittery beaded skirts and dresses. Even Nensi Dojaka, known for sensuality and high-class sex appeal, seemed to have a romantic approach to their collection with delicate flirty touches of sheer, pink and sweetheart necklines throughout their pieces.
Crime Of Passion… For Fashion?
This trend is definitely favouring early 2000s movie/film fashion for inspiration, so it is no surprise that there will be a surge in tube tops, slip dresses and cargo pants. We can also expect to see items that may have been criticised but may now be considered on trend, such as kitten heels. Accessories will be dripping with claw clips, newsboy caps, shrugs, skinny scarves and romantic mini bags. Pastel dresses, mini skirts, vintage garments, cropped cardigans and power suits will be the front runners for this trend. This trend is in line with other significant trends shaking the fashion world in the upcoming spring/summer season, including airy styles, femininity and sheer styles that will lead this year’s fashion trends.
Let’s discuss a few items to help you create some dreamy, romantic, main character outfits to get you ready for the new year and new fashion season. Remember that some of these items may be expensive but are worth the investment as their high-quality nature will last a lifetime.
